Cultural Connections Project
How challenging was this project for you? Be specific.
Overall, this project wasn't too challenging and quite achievable for me. I did run into some obstacles along the way, but overall completed the project well. Some challenges I faced were collecting all of the materials needed for my ofrenda, as well as completing all of the creative writing for my illustrated journal. Although none of what I struggled with was impossible to complete, it was still a bump in the road. For my ofrenda, such items as the photos were easy to find, but other requirements such as personal possessions or food and drink were harder to create, and I had to get creative in the way that I achieved adding them. For my food and drink, I was able to print out a paper version which I then taped to the inside. For personal possessions I had some of her old jewelry, and made a 3D bookshelf out of cardboard and paper. I realized that I would have to get innovative and come up with a way that would work to share what I needed to in my ofrenda. For my illustrated journal, I had a hard time getting my creative writing juices to start flowing, hit a few bumps when writing the entries. I was able to slowly but surely complete it though.
What did you enjoy most about this Cultural Connections project?
I enjoyed the writing and creating of our ofrendas, and being able to understand more of the culture which celebrates Dia De Los Muertos. Both were good uses of my time and I felt like I grew as a student and individual while learning and completing this project. I was able to make pan de muerto(bread of the dead) , papel picado (paper decorations), paper roses, and so much more. Other students also made sugar skulls, which are another well known piece of Dia De Los Muertos.
Did you receive critique and feedback from anyone (teacher, parent, classmate, etc)? If so, who? Was the feedback helpful? (This could be for any part of the project, illustrated journal, ofrenda, exhibition)
I gave and received feedback from my classmates while working on the ofrenda and the illustrated journal. The feedback was overall helpful and allowed me to improve my products. I was reminded to add certain aspects to my ofrenda, was rewarded for my hard work with positive critique, and was also given other things to add or work on. For the illustrated journal, my partner gave me the most critique, reminding me what I needed to add and work on to make it better and more accurate and appealing.
What grade do you think you deserve? Why?
I believe I deserve an A because I completed all of my products and made them praiseworthy and exhibit-able, worked well with everyone I encountered, and kept a positive and productive attitude even when it became difficult to do so. I worked hard on everything and tried to make all of my work something I could be proud, and I succeeded in that area. For these reasons I think I deserve a good grade.
If you could change something about this project, what would it be?
I would probably have started my ofrenda a bit earlier and gathered all the needed pieces together earlier as well because then I would have much more time to complete it and get critique so I could make it even better and have even higher quality work. I also would have given myself more time on my illustrated journal parts because I procrastinated a lot which made it harder to complete my work and make it praiseworthy. Other than that, I think I enjoyed the project and what we learned overall.
