Renaissance Project Reflection
In this project, we learned all about the Renaissance Era - the good and the bad - and were able to choose a person from the Renaissance and then become them for exhibition. I became Lavinia Fontana, the first woman portraitist to be paid commission for her art. I enjoyed the project and reflected on what I accomplished, what I would change, what I'm proud of, and much more.
In terms of how challenging it was, I would say this project was a 7 because we had a good amount of work given and learned a lot, but it was never something that felt near impossible or that I was incapable of doing. There were frustrating moments where I thought I wouldn’t have enough time to finish, and static moments where it felt like we weren’t getting done what we needed to as a group, but overall it was never too hard or too long. I felt like this project benefited me and was enjoyable, and there weren’t too many negative parts to this project.
The aspect of the project that was most challenging was the timeframe which we had to complete our exhibition set-up because we were only given about half a week to set-up and decorate the room. We didn’t get all of the supplies until the last minute, and some supplies weren’t even attainable. It would have helped to have a whole week or be able to collect supplies and create a layout for all rooms so that we could be more prepared, have more time to practice speaking, and do more with the room such as an interactive children’s painting area.
I received feedback about my writing piece from multiple students; Angeline, Jeremy, Diego, and Wyatt. The feedback they gave was very helpful since I wasn’t completely sure what direction I wanted to go with my piece or if I liked where it was headed. Before and while creating it, I constantly asked their opinion to make sure it made sense and was well put together. I also checked in with them after for corrections and final touches if needed.
For how proud I am of my writing piece, I would say an 8 out of 10 because although I really like my piece, I feel like it could have been better and there was a more advanced option I could have done. It doesn’t feel like it took too much effort for me to complete and I would have liked to push myself a bit more.
I am happy with how I did overall for exhibition because I put in my full effort, gave my fair share of ideas which - for the most part - were used, had a leadership role in my group, helped with the actual layout and set-up, and didn’t slack while others worked hard. I made sure to communicate with all group members and do anything I could to ensure the completion of our room. I also didn’t wait until the last minute for a costume, and found one quite quickly in Mrs. Howard’s costume bucket, which I then hid away until needed. I was able to talk to guests about the Renaissance era, my character, and - because I was in the art room - the art completed this semester by students and its relation to the ideology of the Renaissance.
If I could change something about the project, I would probably want more time to recreate and dive into our characters, and to be able to make a skit or adopt a “language” such as Elizabethan. I think if we were given a bit more open work time that could be more structured it could help reach group goals and individual goals more efficiently.
I do mainly feel confident that I understand the lasting impact of the Renaissance. Their architecture, religious growth and creation of new religions, the art which they created, and the government which was founded were just a few of many innovations made during the time period which led to and influenced the world we live in today. I do think there are some things that we learned quickly and since we had so much information to soak up, I can’t remember every bit. The Renaissance was a period of reflection and recreation, of art, architecture, government, religion, community, and so on. We do the same knowing looking back on history is the best way to move forward without repeating something unwise, and reminds us to look back if we need advice.
I think grade wise I deserve an A because throughout the whole project, as well as exhibition, I worked hard, had good work ethic, was a good group member and partner when working on different products and set-up for exhibition, gave my fair share of ideas while creating products and setting up, listened to others and made sure to communicate and collaborate instead of focusing only on my goals and ideas, completed all of my work (even if it meant making four drafts to accomplish all parts of the product), made quality work instead of just barely meeting the requirements and then moving on, and didn’t slack and let others do the work for me.
