For this project, we had to choose a character trait that would make the world more
equitable. Then, we had to make several symbols that represented respect, and we would turn those
symbols into wooden laser cut pieces that we would then make into a mobile. The mobile is a
symbol for equity as it’s in perfect balance with itself. We chose the word respect, as we feel that if
we want to live in a more equitable environment, we should have respect for one another. We feel
due to lack of respect, people like to demonize others and act as if they are evil. We believe that if
everyone understood that we are all human, and that we all want the same results, we would all treat
each other better.
Our first symbol for respect is a handshake. A handshake is a greeting and a farewell, but it’s
also a symbol of respect. One example of this is before every presidential debate, the candidates
always shake hands to show courtesy towards one another. Our other symbols include a man
bowing and the Mandarin symbol for respect. While the Mandarin symbol is self explanatory,
around the world bowing is considered a sign of honor.
We also chose three heroes, the first being Penn Jillette. Penn Jillette is an author, TV star,
Vegas magician, and political philosopher. Penn openly speaks about things he disagrees with such
as war, large government, religious extremists, and violence. However, people who he disagrees with
he always shows respect towards. He doesn’t agree with Obama that much, but he always respects
him as a person, saying things like, “Obama is a great guy and he’s really, really smart”. For his
symbol, we chose Penn Point, which is his show’s name, which represents him as well as what he
does.
Our second hero is Marilyn Monroe. We chose Marilyn Monroe because during the 50’s,
feministic standards were very strict, such as curling your hair, being skinny, and wearing dresses and
skirts. Marilyn Monroe changed those standards by showing her body image and with her being a
slightly thicker woman. Other woman looked up to her and felt more comfortable with being
thicker and not having the “perfect body” and she gained a lot of respect for that. We chose a
portrait shot of her as the symbol, which is self explanatory for representing Marilyn Monroe.
Our third hero we chose is Simone Biles, a gymnast and gold medalist during the 2016 Rio
Olympics. She is someone who has earned respect and still respects those around her, even after
